The average modern user has over 100 accounts: email, social media, banks, online stores, work services. Inventing different strong passwords for all is impossible, so most people reuse a few simple ones. This is a huge security hole — breach of one site exposes all accounts. Password managers solve this problem.
What a password manager does
A password manager is software that stores all your passwords in an encrypted database. You only remember one "master password", everything else works automatically. Browser extensions auto-fill the right password on each site. When creating a new account, the manager suggests a strong random password and saves it. Passwords sync from your computer to your phone and other devices.
Bitwarden — free and open source
Bitwarden offers a free tier with unlimited passwords, and code is open so security is verifiable. Premium costs 10 dollars per year, but free is enough for most. Browser extension, mobile app, web vault are all included. You can self-host for full control. Many technical users prefer it.
1Password — best interface
1Password is subscription-only, 35-50 dollars per year. In return you get the smoothest experience, beautiful UI, family and team plans. Travel Mode lets you temporarily remove sensitive passwords when crossing borders. Watchtower automatically detects your passwords on breached sites. A great choice for businesses.
LastPass — be cautious
LastPass was a leader for years but suffered serious breaches in 2022-2023: user password vaults were stolen. The service still works but know the history. We recommend Bitwarden or 1Password for new users. If you have LastPass, change your master password and migrate to another manager.
KeePass — fully local
KeePass stores passwords only on your computer, sending nothing anywhere. Maximum security but sync is harder. You can put the file in cloud storage and open it manually elsewhere. Perfect for technical users and paranoid types. KeePassXC is a more modern actively maintained fork.
Sayt.uz practice
Sayt.uz panel requires 2FA: even with a password you need SMS or Telegram confirmation. We recommend Bitwarden to clients — free and secure. Account breach means losing domains and sites, so a password manager and 2FA are each mandatory. Hosting from 159,000 UZS, password protection is explained free.
