Previously a lawyer would spend hours reading a multi-page contract, carefully analysing each clause and manually flagging risky passages. Today modern language models can read that same document in a matter of minutes and pull out its key points. Yet however broad the capabilities of this technology may be, it is essential to clearly understand its limits too, because the legal field is extremely sensitive to error.

In this article we will objectively examine how AI analyses legal documents, what its real benefits are and, most importantly, what its serious limitations are. Our goal is neither to praise the technology to the skies nor to reject it entirely, but to understand how to apply it responsibly and in the right place.

What AI can see in a contract

Language models are strong at understanding large volumes of text and identifying the structure within them. When applied to a contract, AI first breaks the document into logical blocks: parties, subject matter, payment terms, liability, termination procedure and dispute resolution. After that it can briefly summarise the content of each section, which helps one quickly grasp a long and heavy document.

In addition, AI tends to flag clauses that create risk. For example, it draws attention to liability terms that excessively protect one party, vaguely worded payment deadlines or a unilateral right of termination. The model can also locate a specific term or concept in the document, gather all the places it is mentioned in one view and check for consistency. Comparing two contracts, that is showing the differences between an old and a new version, is another task that AI handles well.

Practical areas of application

For business owners, AI serves as a convenient tool for quickly reviewing a contract before signing. An entrepreneur may not fully understand complex legal language, but AI can explain the essence of the document in simple words and point out the places that require attention. This does not replace the final decision, but it helps form a basic understanding before turning to a lawyer.

For lawyers, AI is especially useful when working at scale. When hundreds of documents need to be reviewed during due diligence, AI can perform an initial sorting and bring forward the documents that require attention. This allows the specialist to focus their time on the most important issues. Identifying missing standard terms, such as noticing the absence of a confidentiality clause or a force majeure provision, is also among the tasks where AI provides assistance.

The main benefit: speed and scale

The greatest advantage of AI is speed and scale. A person can carefully review only a limited number of documents in a day, whereas AI processes thousands of pages in a short time. This is especially effective when working with repetitive and standardised documents. Searching for the same risky clause across hundreds of similar contracts is tedious and error-prone work for a human, but a simple task for AI.

Beyond that, AI does not get tired or lose attention. Towards the end of a long working day a person may overlook certain details, whereas AI approaches every document with the same focus. For this reason, although it does not replace human work, it is valuable as a complementary layer that reduces errors.

Important limitations and the risk of error

Here the most important truth must be stated clearly: AI cannot replace legal advice. It analyses text, but it does not take on legal responsibility and does not understand context as deeply as a human lawyer. AI can sometimes draw an incorrect conclusion in a confident tone, cite a non-existent article of law or wrongly assess the legal consequences of a clause. Such errors can be very costly in the legal field.

Therefore every conclusion produced by AI must be reviewed by a qualified lawyer. The correct approach is to view AI not as the maker of the final decision but as a supporting tool. It points the specialist to the places worth attention, but assessing the real legal meaning of those places still rests with the human. Blind trust in an automated conclusion can lead to serious consequences.

Confidentiality and ethical questions

Legal documents often contain highly confidential information โ€” trade secrets, personal data, financial figures. Before sending such documents to external AI services, it is necessary to know exactly how that service stores and uses the data. Protecting client data is a professional duty of the lawyer, and carelessly sending information to an external system can lead to serious consequences.

For this reason many organisations prefer solutions that operate in a closed, internal environment, or use services with clearly guaranteed confidentiality terms. From an ethical standpoint, it is also important to inform the client about the use of AI and to explain that final responsibility still rests with the specialist.

The Uzbekistan context

In Uzbekistan, applying AI tools in law comes with its own difficulties. Most powerful language models are trained mainly on English, and their accuracy when analysing legal texts in Uzbek and Russian may decline. Uzbek legal terminology and document forms differ from international practice, so general models do not always correctly capture local nuances.

In addition, the legislation of Uzbekistan has its own specifics, and AI may often give answers based on foreign legal systems. Therefore, when using AI in a local context, its conclusions should be treated with even greater caution and must be verified with a lawyer familiar with local legislation. Over time, as solutions in the local language and adapted to the legislation appear, the situation will improve, but for now human oversight is especially necessary.

In summary, AI is a powerful and useful assistant in analysing legal documents, but it does not replace a lawyer. When applied correctly it saves time, allows work at scale and directs attention to the right places. However, its conclusions must always undergo the oversight of a qualified specialist, confidentiality must be strictly protected, and local legislation must be taken into account. A responsible approach is the reasonable combination of technology and human experience.
