A featured snippet is a special box in Google's results shown above the regular listings. It's called "position zero". It gives a direct answer to the user's question and drives significant traffic.
Types
1) Paragraph — a short text answer (most common, ~70%). 2) List — numbered or bulleted ("5 steps", a recipe). 3) Table — prices, comparison. 4) Video — a clip from YouTube.
How to win it
Key requirement: you must already rank in the top 10. Google usually picks the snippet from first-page results. Then you optimize the content for the snippet.
Question-answer format
Make a clear question a heading (H2): "How much does a domain cost?". Right below it write a precise 40-60 word answer. Google takes exactly this short, direct answer as the snippet.
For a list snippet
When describing "steps" or "methods", use clear <ol> or <ul>. Each item short and clear.
For a table snippet
Price comparisons, features — via an HTML <table>. Google shows the table as a snippet.
Finding questions
1) The "People also ask" box in results. 2) AnswerThePublic.com — a question generator. 3) Question-shaped queries in GSC. 4) Queries starting with "how", "what", "how much", "why".
Boost with FAQ schema
Adding FAQ Schema.org markup helps Google understand your Q&As better and increases the chance of appearing in snippets and "People also ask".
Connection to voice search
Voice search (Google Assistant, Alexa) often reads the answer from a featured snippet. Winning a snippet = you answer in voice search too.
Caution: "no-click"
Sometimes users take the answer from the snippet and don't visit the site. So give an intriguing, not complete, answer — encourage them to visit for details.
