When choosing hosting you encounter the terms "regular hosting" and "VPS". How do they differ?
Regular (shared) hosting
Many sites are placed on one server and resources (CPU, RAM) are shared among them. This is the most convenient and affordable option, requiring almost no setup.
VPS (virtual server)
On a VPS you get dedicated CPU, RAM and disk — no one else takes them. In addition, you have full root control.
Main differences
- Resources: hosting — shared; VPS — dedicated and guaranteed.
- Control: on a VPS you configure the server as you wish.
- Price: hosting is cheaper; VPS is more expensive.
- Technical knowledge: hosting is for beginners; VPS requires some experience.
When is regular hosting enough?
For business-card sites, blogs, small online stores and WordPress sites, regular hosting is fully sufficient.
When is a VPS needed?
For high-traffic sites, special software and full server control, a VPS is chosen.
For most sites it is right to start with regular hosting.
