The Google Disavow Tool lets a site owner mark certain backlinks as \"ignored\" in Google's index. If harmful, spammy or low-quality links point at your site and hurt your SEO, Disavow tells Google \"these links aren't from me, please disregard them when ranking\". The tool appeared in 2012 and has been a key defence for site owners ever since.
What Disavow is and when you need it
Links to your site come from many places: good blogs, official sites, social networks, and sometimes low-quality or shady sources. Good links help SEO; bad links hurt it. Even if you have never bought a backlink, artificial and harmful ones can appear on their own: automated bots, negative SEO from competitors, hacked sites.
You need Disavow when: you got an \"Unnatural Links\" penalty, GSC shows spam-link warnings, your backlink analysis reveals many low-quality or suspicious sources, or you were hit by negative SEO. In these situations Disavow is your defence.
Analysis before Disavow
Before using it โ deep analysis. Tools: Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic. Export all backlinks and judge each: what's the source site? Topically related? Would a real user click through? What's the site's authority (DR/UR)?
Signs of low quality or risk: topic mismatch (porn or gambling site linking to hosting), auto-generated (same content in many languages), very low DR (<5), giving thousands of links with one exact-match anchor, part of a network of harmful sites.
Disavow file format
Plain text (.txt), UTF-8. One domain or URL per line. Domain-level: domain:harmful-site.com. Single URL: https://harmful-site.com/page.html.
Comments are recommended. Start a line with # and write the note: # 2026-02 penalty recovery, comment-section spam. Helps you understand the disavow history six months later.
How to use Disavow
Go to search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links. It's a special URL โ not visible in regular GSC. Select your site and click \"Upload disavow list\".
A new upload replaces the existing list. If you had 50 links disavowed and now upload 20, the old 50 are gone โ only 20 remain. So always upload a full combined list, old and new together. Keep the previous file โ it's useful when updating later.
When NOT to use Disavow
It's powerful, but misuse can kill your SEO. The biggest mistake is \"if I'm unsure, I disavow\". You may disavow good legitimate links, and Google will stop counting them. Your SEO drops.
Disavow only clearly harmful or suspicious links. If the source site is normal, on-topic and quality โ don't disavow. Also: for small sites (<1000 backlinks) Disavow usually isn't needed. Google is great at this โ it ignores low-quality links itself.
Disavow and the Core Algorithm
In 2024-2025 Google officially stated: most sites don't need the Disavow Tool, because the algorithm automatically detects low-quality links and discounts them. John Mueller said: \"Most sites don't need to use the disavow tool\".
Cases remain: a clear Manual Penalty (Unnatural Links), negative SEO, response to a massive low-quality link campaign. In those situations Disavow helps fast.
When the Disavow effect is visible
After upload Google rechecks links on the next crawl. 2-4 weeks. Faster for recent links, slower for old ones.
In penalty recovery Disavow works with Reconsideration Request. First disavow all suspicious links, then submit Reconsideration explaining \"I have disavowed, the site is clean\". Penalty removal โ 1-3 months.
Sayt.uz experience
Sayt.uz has never received a Manual Penalty, so Disavow isn't strategically needed. But every 3-6 months we analyse the backlink profile and find suspicious ones. There are 2400+ links currently, 30-40 low-quality. Instead of disavowing we trust Google โ the algorithm itself ignores them.
Our strategy: use Disavow only for clear spam (porn, gambling, hacked sites) or a targeted negative SEO attack. Otherwise Google's algorithm is enough. The approach works โ our SEO evaluation improves with each Core Update.
