Writing SEO content: a practical 2026 guide

Writing SEO content is the craft of creating content that is excellent for both the user and Google. Since the Helpful Content Update, content optimised for Google but useless to users doesn't rank. Real SEO writing means fully answering the user's question, being easy to read, and being technically optimised.

1. Keyword research

Before writing. Real Google search, top-10 analysis, People Also Ask. One main keyword + 5-10 long-tail.

2. Search intent

Informational, navigational, commercial, transactional. The content must match.

3. Title

50-60 characters, keyword first. Formula: keyword + hook + precision.

4. H1 and intro

H1 similar to title but fuller. Intro 100-150 words, keyword in the first 100.

5. Structure — H2/H3

H2 as questions or clear sections. Helps skim reading and featured snippets.

6. Paragraphs

2-4 sentences, 50-80 words. Main idea first. Vary length.

7. Examples and statistics

Every claim backed by a real example. Case studies, real numbers.

8. Internal and external links

3-5 internal, 1-3 external to authoritative sources.

9. Images

Every 300-500 words. Alt text, SEO file name.

10. Schema markup

Article or BlogPosting + FAQ if present.

11. Technical nuances

Meta description 140-160. Short URL. Speed LCP <2.5s. Mobile.
