Thin content: Google's biggest quality issue and how it punishes it

← All articles

Thin content is Google's term for low-quality content that provides little or no value to users. The page isn't empty; there is content, but it is shallow, repetitive or insufficient. Since the Helpful Content Update, Google penalises thin content severely.

What thin content is

Very short articles (200-300 words), copied content, AI-generated text, thin affiliate pages, manufacturer product descriptions copy-pasted, door pages (\"Hosting Tashkent\", \"Hosting Samarkand\").

Helpful Content Update

Since 2022 Google evaluates the whole site. Lots of thin content — even quality pages fall.

Why it's dangerous

Bad UX (pogo-sticking), poor ranking signals (bounce, dwell), site-wide effect — the whole site suffers.

How to identify it

GSC \"Pages\" → \"Excluded\". site:sayt.uz and manual check. Analytics — weakest dwell/bounce.

What to do

Improve (add content, examples, expertise). Merge similar pages into one quality one. Remove (410 or 404).

How much content is needed

Blog post 1500-2500 words. Category 300-500 unique words. Product 200-300 own words.

Affiliate and e-commerce

No copy-pasting manufacturer descriptions. Real tests, comparisons, reviews.

AI content

AI itself isn't bad, but mass low-quality AI is. Use AI as a tool; edit and add expertise.

Audit

At least twice a year. Evaluate every post and decide.

Sayt.uz practice

All blog posts at least 1500 unique words. Product pages with unique descriptions and reviews. GSC \"Excluded\" is almost empty.
