A Separate Domain for Short Links: Branded URLs That People Trust

In marketing messages, the length of a URL matters more than it seems. Every character counts in an SMS, nobody types a long link from a poster by hand, and a radio ad's address must be remembered after one hearing. Many companies turn to public link shorteners, but a random string on someone else's domain does not inspire trust, and some people skip such links as possible phishing. A short domain carrying your brand solves this: the link stays short and the sender is obvious.

What makes a good short domain

It should recall the main brand, be easy to say and hard to mistype. If the main site lives on a long name like misol-savdo-markazi.uz, a compact option like misol.uz serves short links. Avoid hyphens, digits and letter pairs that Uzbek spells two ways, because people writing down a spoken link may get them wrong. Keep the short domain in the same account as the main one with auto-renewal on: an expired short domain hands every link in your old ads to a stranger.

A subdomain such as go.misol-savdo-markazi.uz costs nothing but is not short, so it suits emails and site buttons, while SMS and print benefit from a separate short domain.

Example: a Samarkand restaurant's SMS campaign

A family restaurant in Samarkand wanted to text regular guests about a weekend menu. The full menu URL with tracking tags exceeded a hundred characters, leaving almost no room for the message. One SMS segment holds up to 160 Latin characters but only 70 when Cyrillic is used, so every extra character can split the message and raise the cost. The restaurant used a short link like misol.uz/menyu that pointed to the full URL with UTM tags, so SMS visits showed up separately in analytics.

The simple approach: redirects in .htaccess

For a handful of rarely changing links, no extra software is needed. Attach the short domain to an empty site on your hosting and add a rule per link:

RewriteEngine On

# misol.uz/menyu -> menu page (SMS campaign)
RewriteRule ^menyu/?$ https://misol-savdo-markazi.uz/menyu?utm_source=sms&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=weekend [R=302,L]

# misol.uz/katalog -> catalog (print poster)
RewriteRule ^katalog/?$ https://misol-savdo-markazi.uz/katalog?utm_source=poster&utm_medium=print [R=302,L]

# everything else goes to the main site
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://misol-savdo-markazi.uz/ [R=302,L]

It needs no database or admin panel and uses almost no resources. The downside is editing the file for each new link and having no separate click counts; statistics come from the main site's analytics via UTM tags.

The fuller approach: your own shortener

If there are many links or the marketing team must create them itself, an open-source PHP and MySQL application such as YOURLS works well on ordinary hosting. It lets you create links in the browser, see click counts and choose custom short names. Check the PHP requirements in its official documentation, protect the admin login with a strong password, and keep link creation private: open shorteners are quickly found by spammers, and your domain can end up on blocklists.

301 or 302

Browsers remember a permanent 301 for a long time, so if you later change the target, some returning visitors still land on the old page. Marketing links are usually temporary, so a 302 is safer. Keep 301 for addresses that truly never change, such as the short domain's home page.

Trust and safety rules

Setting up a short domain is a one-time job with lasting benefits. On sayt.uz hosting the main site and the short domain can live in one account with automatically renewed SSL certificates, and customers see at a glance whose link they are clicking.
