OpenCart is an open-source PHP e-commerce platform developed by Daniel Kerr in 2008. Today about 950,000 active stores run on it worldwide, a significant share in the CIS (Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Belarus). OpenCart is known for being lightweight with a simple admin โ it needs fewer plugins than WooCommerce, but extension options are also more limited.
OpenCart vs WooCommerce
OpenCart is a standalone solution โ it doesn't require WordPress or another CMS, it's an independent PHP application. WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, requiring the WordPress base. OpenCart is lighter on hosting โ it can run on 1GB RAM, while WooCommerce recommends 2GB minimum. The OpenCart admin is simpler, easier for beginners.
The ecosystem is smaller, however. The OpenCart App Store has about 14,000 modules, mostly from CIS developers. WooCommerce has 5000+ plugins from a global community with higher overall quality.
Setup steps
Step 1 โ requirements: PHP 7.4+ (8.0 recommended), MySQL 5.7+, cURL, GD, OpenSSL, 512MB RAM (1GB recommended). Sayt.uz has no dedicated OpenCart plan, but "Universal Hosting" works โ 29,000 sum/mo at tier 1. Step 2 โ download OpenCart from opencart.com and upload to hosting via FTP or File Manager.
Step 3 โ create the MySQL database and run install.php: enter admin login, password, store name โ store is ready in 5-10 minutes. Step 4 โ install Uzbek language pack: no official one, but local developers provide it (50-150K sum), downloadable from opencart-uzbek.uz or similar.
Payments and delivery
Click and Payme modules for OpenCart exist but are less common than in WooCommerce. Click for OpenCart is 400-600K sum; Payme is 500-700K sum. There's no official Yandex Delivery module โ done manually or via third-party scripts. For taxes OpenCart supports VAT, but 1C export needs an extra module (300-500K sum).
Performance and security
OpenCart runs reasonably fast by default but optimization matters. Recommendations: VQMOD or OCMOD (modifications without changing core), cache module (CacheFor OpenCart $30), CDN (Cloudflare free). Security: change the admin URL from /admin/, enable 2FA, back up weekly.
Sayt.uz practice
OpenCart is the second-most-popular e-commerce solution among Sayt.uz clients: 138 active stores as of January 2026. Top modules: ocStore Russian (Uzbek version), CacheFor (43%), Click Gateway (72%), VQMOD (89%). Average setup cost: 1.8-3M sum one-time, 400-1200K sum/mo maintenance. Tip: if you're not familiar with WordPress, OpenCart is a better choice โ the admin is faster to learn.
