How to Connect Your Own Domain to a Tilda Website: DNS Setup Step by Step

Tilda makes it easy to build a good-looking site in a couple of days without a developer. But a new project first opens at a technical address like project1234567.tilda.ws, which is not something you can print on a business card. For customer trust, advertising and search engines, the site needs to live on your own domain. The job has two sides: you enter the domain name in the Tilda project settings, and you add DNS records that send visitors to Tilda's servers.

What to check before you start

First, make sure your Tilda plan allows custom domains, because the free plan only works with the technical address. Next, find out where your domain's DNS is managed. If the domain was registered through sayt.uz and its nameservers point to our servers, you edit records in the domain's DNS section of the cabinet. If the nameservers were moved to another service such as Cloudflare, the changes must be made there, otherwise your new records will have no effect.

Also remember that the domain may already carry business email. Tilda only hosts the website, not your mailboxes, so the MX, SPF and DKIM records must stay untouched. Many problems start when someone wipes the whole zone to "start clean" and the next day customer emails stop arriving.

Entering the domain in Tilda

Open the project, go to Site Settings and choose Domain. Type the domain without the protocol, for example example.uz or www.example.uz. Most people make the short root domain primary and redirect www to it. After saving, Tilda shows which DNS records it expects. Follow those hints and Tilda's help center, because the service can change its IP addresses over time.

The DNS records to add

Two records are usually enough: an A record for the root pointing to Tilda's IP, and a CNAME for www pointing to tilda.ws. At the time of writing, Tilda's documentation lists 185.165.123.36 for the root, but check it against the official help page before adding it.

TypeNameValueNote
A@185.165.123.36Root domain, verify the IP with Tilda's help
CNAMEwwwtilda.wswww subdomain
MX@unchangedKeep your mail records

Review existing records first. If the root already has an A record pointing to a hosting server, edit or delete it, since two different A records make browsers alternate between the old site and Tilda. A name also cannot have both an A record and a CNAME. Remove any AAAA (IPv6) record that points to the old server, or IPv6 users will keep landing on the previous page.

Example: a flower shop in Tashkent

Imagine a small flower shop in Chilanzar that built a catalog site on Tilda and bought gulbozor.uz. The domain previously showed a simple page on shared hosting, and info@gulbozor.uz runs on that same hosting. The right move is to change the root A record to Tilda's IP, add the www CNAME, and leave the MX record and the mail subdomain records alone. The site now loads from Tilda while order emails still reach the hosting mail server.

Checking propagation

DNS changes are not instant: until the old record's TTL expires, resolvers may serve cached data. This usually takes minutes to a few hours, occasionally up to a day.

dig +short A example.uz
dig +short CNAME www.example.uz
nslookup example.uz 8.8.8.8

The first command should return Tilda's IP and the second tilda.ws. Once the answers are right, refresh the domain status in Tilda. The service then issues an SSL certificate automatically and the site opens over https://. Issuing the certificate can take a little while too, so a brief "not secure" warning is no reason to panic.

Common mistakes

If the domain opens but shows Tilda's "domain not connected" page, DNS is fine but the name in Tilda differs, for example it is set with www while you open the bare domain. If the old hosting page still appears, an old A record was not removed or the nameservers point elsewhere. With Cloudflare, an enabled proxy (orange cloud) can block certificate issuance, so keep it in DNS-only mode while connecting.

Finally, confirm which version is primary so www and non-www are not indexed as two sites, and add the site to Google Search Console. For extra Tilda projects under one domain, such as shop.example.uz, add a separate CNAME for each subdomain and enter it in that project's settings.
